ABOUT ACTIVE LIVING RESEARCH
AND THE ACTIVE LIVING CONFERENCE

Since 2001, Active Living Research (ALR) has been at the forefront of building evidence about how to create communities that are great for physical activity. We have learned that communities designed for activity are better for health, economic vitality, and environmental sustainability.

Our mission is to work with governments, the private sector, and advocacy groups to apply the lessons of research to building great communities.

Active Living Research was begun at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and led by a trans-disciplinary program team. The founders included internationally-recognized experts with deep connections in public health, transportation, planning, parks & recreation, school activity programs, behavioral science, and obesity prevention. Their goal is to support, share and put into practice research that can promote daily physical activity for children and families across the world.

In 2020, with the retirement of its founder and pressures from the COVID-19 pandemic, a reorganization took place resulting in an exciting new alliance between Active Living Research and GP RED to co-host and coordinate the Active Living Conference. Our organizations share the vision of creating a community-driven, sustainable event for sharing the latest research, policies, and practices that advance activity-friendly communities for everyone.

The Active Living Conference

The Active Living Conference (ALC) began in 2004 as a venue for both cutting-edge research and for making findings usable by non-scientists. The conference brings together a diverse audience and provides networking and engagement opportunities for active living researchers and practitioners from many fields. Presentations and discussions focus on the importance of creating healthier communities for all people.

GP RED

GP RED (RED) is the sponsoring fiscal agent for the conference. Founded in 2008, RED is a non-profit organization whose goal is to fully recognize and expand research, education, and resource development activities for community “quality of life” agencies. The work of RED supports and provides opportunities for health, recreation and land management agencies, along with the associations and universities that support them, to work collaboratively and proactively to identify and fill gaps in knowledge and practical resources.
