Whole Measures for Parks & Recreation, a values-based community visioning process and measurement tool focused on universal access to public lands, social equity in parks and recreation service delivery, and sustaining natural resources.

What organizations and communities measure often determines what they pay attention to and says much about what they value. Whole Measures believes that one of the greatest challenges currently faced by the conservation movement – and others seeking to create stronger relationships between healthy people, communities and lands – is the way we define, talk about and measure success. The challenge is that we become what we measure, and conservationists primarily measure dollars, acres, and biological diversity.

Founded in 2003, Center for Whole Communities was created from within the conservation movement to initiate and participate in a respectful, intentional and thorough effort at re-invention. Their mission is to work with leaders from across the land movement to help forge a more powerful, cohesive, and inclusive vision for land restoration and conservation in America. Their definition of the land movement includes those working for land and ecological restoration, food security, community revitalization, active living, smart growth, the faith community, social and environmental justice, public health and land conservation.

Whole Measures, and its integrated training programs, is one of their primary programs to help these groups collaborate, innovate, and be more responsive to the diversity of people and new politics that constitute America’s culture. Center for Whole Communities is a bridge between diverse organizations and the safe harbor where these groups can creatively solve complex problems and find more effective strategies for leadership.

GP RED Advisory Board Member, Cindy Heath, is a Certified Trainer for Whole Measures and, in general, GP RED endorses the Mission, Guiding Principles, Vision & Values, and Value-Based Practices used by the many partners in the Whole Measures community.
